Apple Releases Java Update 5 for Snow Leopard and Update 10 for Leopard

java iconApple today released a pair of Java updates for users of Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Leopard, patching vulnerabilities and increasing reliability and compatibility.

- Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 5 (75.45 MB, Requires Mac OS X 10.6.4)

Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 5 delivers improved compatibility, security, and reliability by updating Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_26.

- Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 10 (120.33 MB, Requires Mac OS X 10.5.8)

Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 10 delivers improved compatibility, security, and reliability by updating J2SE 5.0 to 1.5.0_30, and updating Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_26 for 64-bit capable Intel-based Macs.

J2SE 1.4.2 is no longer being updated to fix bugs or security issues and remains disabled by default in this update.

It's clear that Apple doesn't care about Java anymore, but it would be pretty bad if there is no "official" JRE on Lion.

You do realize that there's no official JRE on Windows or Linux either, right? This was some "control" thing that Apple adopted long ago, and very recently decided it wasn't worth the trouble. This DOES NOT mean that Java and Mac are now incompatible in any way. Apple should be praised for realizing they were wrong and finally handing control of Java on Mac OS back to its developer, Oracle.

All this means is that Java updates are now more timely.

Wow... Apple updates Java under a month after it was released by Oracle? That's almost speedy :p

I'm open to being corrected, but if I remember right, one of the announcements by Apple surrounding Java seemed to suggest that they would continue to supply Java 6, even on Lion, whereas Java 7 would be Oracle's territory.

Hopefully one of the last before Apple allows Oracle to [rightly] support Java on Mac OS X.
