Apple Highlights Spatial Gaming on Vision Pro

Apple today highlighted spatial gaming experiences on the Vision Pro headset, claiming that it is "the beginning of a new era in gaming."

While over 250 games are available on the Vision Pro via Apple Arcade, the company drew particular attention to 12 "unique spatial games" offered exclusively via the gaming subscription service.

Spatial games built specifically for Arcade on Apple Vision Pro unlock amazing new gameplay opportunities by blending digital content with the physical world. visionOS delivers powerful spatial experiences with a brand-new three-dimensional user interface and input system controlled entirely by a user's eyes, hands, and voice. Players are able to slice apples with their hands as their living room transforms into their very own dojo in Super Fruit Ninja, tee up the perfect shot as they move freely around a quirky golf course right in their home in WHAT THE GOLF?, escape into a mesmerizing audiovisual experience in Synth Riders, and so much more.

The featured spatial games on ‌Apple Arcade‌ include:

  • Jetpack Joyride 2
  • Patterned
  • Illustrated

Apple added that "even more magical spatial gaming experiences" are coming soon to ‌Apple Arcade‌, listing three upcoming titles:

  • Alto's Odyssey: The Lost City
  • Gibbon: Beyond the Trees
  • Spire Blast

‌Apple Arcade‌ launched in 2019 and is available for $6.99 per month, providing access to hundreds of ad-free games across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro. The service is also included as part of the Apple One subscription bundle, which starts at $19.95 per month.

If y’all only knew what was coming….😂.

You’re delusional if you think Apple doesn’t have the big boys waiting to come to the platform.
Who are these “big boys” you speak of?
And you better believe they are “waiting”. Waiting to see if the AVP installed base has any chance of making any development investment worthwhile. I think with all the hype building up to the AVP release, Apple would have ensured they had at least one mind-blowing “spatial gaming” experience from “the big boys” available with the launch. I haven’t seen it. Whether that meant delaying the launch and/or investing the development directly, it would have been in Apple’s interest to do so.

We bought one VisionPro to see if it could be used in our normal work environment. It can. Our lucky test employee is able to work all day generating reports out of a FileMaker database, emailing customers, using group chat; normal work-related activities. It's actually quite useful. Even more so when used in conjunction with his MacBook Pro as it provides much more work space than the built-in display.

The only thing that stops us from buying more is that it only works with Apple's poorly designed and totally useless Magic Mouse. Once it works with regular mice, we will buy more.
Genuinely curious. How much more productive is the test employee with the AVP than just using the MacBook Pro and whatever “antiquated” tools were available? How was the execution of those tasks made better?

Without 3D controllers, “spatial” gaming on the AVP isn’t very compelling.

Well, for a product that "nobody would buy" and now "everybody is returning," the third party apps designed for Vpro keep on coming. 🎉

I just got a note from the fantastic Channels app ('https://getchannels.com/live-tv/') (the most used app on AppleTVs around my household) that they now run on Vpro too.

And I just saw a developer post in one of the threads yesterday that they have an app to watch the multitudes of 360 degree VR videos ('https://apps.apple.com/us/app/sphere360/id6477728448?ign-itscg=30200&ign-itsct=apps_box_link') on YouTube and Vimeo on Vpro. That should be interesting to try as those are look-all-around-videos (even behind) like these examples (after one starts playing, click & hold on it to drag it around to see other views. In Vpro, you should be able to just look around)...

Cue the pessimists burning time & energy in every thread about a product in which they have no interest and presumably have not purchased to ridicule this batch of apps too. And come back to ridicule the next batch, and the next, and the next batch after that without even giving them a try.
