Apple Now Offering Radeon Pro W5500X for Mac Pro

Apple's Mac Pro can now be configured with a Radeon Pro W5550X with 8GB of GDDR6 memory, a graphics card option that's a step above the entry-level Radeon Pro 580X but not as expensive as the W5700X graphics card that Apple introduced as an option in April.

Upgrading a Mac Pro with the Radeon Pro W5550X costs an additional $200 over the base price of the machine.

The AMD Radeon Pro W5500X with 8GB of GDDR6 memory is based on AMD's RDNA architecture, featuring up to 5.6 teraflops of single-precision performance or 11.2 teraflops of half-precision computing. It supports up to four 4K displays, one 5K display, or one Pro Display XDR.

The Radeon Pro W5500X can also be purchased as a standalone half-height MPX Module for $600.

I wonder how many people are spending money on a new Mac Pro now considering that the entire Mac line will be replaced with ARM in 2-5 years ?
If you need a Mac Pro - style machine, chances are you don’t have time to wait. And your chances of really needing Intel are much higher if you’re a Mac Pro buyer than if you are a macbook air buyer.

We can afford it and make money from it in one project alone. When the new ARM comes out, we will invest in that next and replace these ones.

Don't be like me and buy one of these now. You'll get a few years and then you can't take advantage of the faster performance and benefits from new code written for FCPX with Apple Silicon. I should have gone with a MacbookPro 16 fully spec'ed instead of $14K for the 2019 MacPro. Replacing the MacbookPro hurts a lot less in a few years when the benefits of the APL Silicon kick in.
I just bought the 16-Core Mac Pro and put 160 Gb of RAM in it.I’m not worried about ARM Macs at all. There’s no way ARM will beat this machine in the 5 years I expect to keep mine. (Save this post in case I have to eat my words).

But seriously, the 160 GB of RAM is killer. I’m constantly at around 100 Gb used. (I’m running a few VMs, [Linux, and macOS at all times, and a Windows VM occasionally).

That probably should have been the default to start with.

Though I note others have pointed out AMD’s glacial rate of GPU introductions/rollouts.

Absolutely GLACIAL...by the time the finish rolling them all out, NVIDIA will be shipping RTX 4000-Series GPUs.
