AirTag 2 Receives Upgraded Feature With Firmware Update

Apple this week released the first firmware update for the AirTag 2, and the company has since shared release notes that explain what is new.

According to Apple, the latest firmware "updates the unwanted tracking sound to more easily locate an unknown AirTag during Precision Finding." The firmware update also includes unspecified "bug fixes and other improvements."

The new firmware has a version number of 3.0.45, and it is for the AirTag 2 only.

Apple says the AirTag is designed exclusively for tracking items like keys or a backpack, but unfortunately some bad actors attempt to use the accessory to track other people. Fortunately, Apple implemented anti-stalking features that alert you if an unknown AirTag is found moving with you, and it eventually emits a sound.

When it first announced the AirTag 2, Apple said the accessory's speaker was 50% louder compared to the previous generation, enabling users to hear the AirTag from up to twice the distance. Now, it has updated the sound that the AirTag 2 emits, but it is unclear if this means the sound is louder or if the tone has changed.

In any case, Apple says an unknown AirTag 2 will be easier to find while using the Precision Finding feature once the firmware update is applied.

You can check your ‌AirTag‌'s firmware version by opening up the Find My app on the iPhone it is paired to, going to the Items tab, tapping on an ‌AirTag‌ in the list, and tapping on the ‌AirTag‌'s name to view its firmware version.

There is no way to force an ‌AirTag‌ update, and firmware is installed over the air via a connected iPhone. To receive firmware updates, make sure your ‌AirTag‌ is within range of your iPhone, and then wait for new firmware to roll out.
