Based on the headline, I thought they discontinued the 15-inch line overall.

That's a bummer. the 15" Air was a great deal
So buy the 15” M3 Air which is the same price as the 15” M2 Air.

So a nearly 2-year old laptop that gets discounted only $100 is good news?

2-year old.
M2 for most consumers is overkill

And its not two years old, your M2 Macbook Air you buy today is new… and actually amazing value for most people.

if Apple were to eliminate the 8GB/256GB base option and make the entry point 16GB/512GB, there is no way they would start the price at $999.

If anything, Apple would increase the price enough to keep their margins high and start it at $1399 which is too far beyond the magic $999 number.
I'd still be ok with it, because there would be great deals at all the 3rd party resellers
That's the issue with the low base specs for me..

The market is flooded with deals for machines I have no interest in (due to low specs), and they can't be upgraded.

I don't get people commenting about the short run of the 15 M2 Air. What difference does it make? It is replaced with a newer version and whoever has the 15 M2 Air can continue using it for a long long time. Discontinuing a product means they won't produce that hardware combination anymore, it doesn't mean the product loses support sooner.
