'iPhone Ultra' Will Solve Two Key Problems

Apple reportedly plans to unveil a foldable iPhone in September, and the device will supposedly solve two problems with foldable smartphones.

Apple Foldable Thumb
In case you missed it, a leaker on Chinese social media platform Weibo recently claimed that the foldable iPhone will be named "iPhone Ultra."

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the device will have improved screen quality and overall durability compared to competing foldables.

"Apple engineers believe they've solved problems with screen quality and overall durability, two long-running flaws with phones in this category," he said.

Specifically, he said the crease in the foldable iPhone's screen will be "less visible when it's unfolded" compared to some other foldables.

Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the foldable iPhone would have a virtually "crease-free" inner display, but Gurman later reported that Apple is using technology that "reduces the crease without eliminating it entirely."

The foldable iPhone is expected to open up like a book, providing users with a large 7.7-inch inner screen for watching videos, playing games, and multitasking with side-by-side apps. The device is also rumored to be equipped with a 5.3-inch outer display, two rear cameras, one front camera, and a Touch ID power button instead of Face ID.

why does Tim believe a crease makes it unusable but a notch is fine?
The sheer amount of hate for a notch on MR is crazy to me. I actuall preferred the notch to the cut out in my 16 pro, and I dont even notice the notch on my macbooks 🤷‍♂️

Kinda feels like they invented the worst iPhone that unfolds into the worst iPad for more than the price of an iPhone 17 Pro and an iPad Air combined.

Maybe it will work? I dunno.

If I had to guess, the reception ends up lukewarm.

As much as the concept appeals, can’t help but feel it would be too fragile still. Then there’s the price tag. Probably in 2x iPhone price range minimum.

Next people will discover they don’t unfold it much in practice. And that it makes for a worse feeling iPhone when not unfolded. Chunkieir, heavier.

Which leads to realization they might as well carry a cheap iPad on trips or in their backpack if they want to watch videos on a bigger screen. And stick to a single screen phone.
I owned a Fold 4 for 2 years. Looked new when I traded it in for the Fold 6. I now have a Fold 7. I use both inside and outside screens when the situation warrants it. On short trips, i now only take my phone and leave my MacBook pro at home. I was nervous about doing it on my first trip, but it has worked out great. All we can do is guess how well the folding IPhone will do in the market. For most of us who own a folding phone, we want it to do well because it expands the competition in that market. Just one persons opinion.
