Apple Sued Over Reported 'Hide My Email' Flaw

General macOS Mail FeatureApple this week was sued over a reported "Hide My Email" flaw that could expose a user's real email address. The proposed class action lawsuit alleges that Apple violated California's false advertising law and other consumer protection statutes by knowingly offering a feature that does not work as advertised.

A security researcher disclosed the apparent "Hide My Email" vulnerability to Apple in June 2025, but there are no known instances of it being exploited, as the steps involved have not been shared with the public as a precaution.

"Hey Apple, I did something wrong using Hide My Email, now I can potentially be exposed and get arrested. I'll sue you."

Seems very logical to me.

Also, which security research has not published a year-long vulnerability? Most would give 6 months tops to make it public, sometimes as part of the NDA of the finding, sometimes to force the company to get it fixed.
TF? There are plenty legitimate use cases. WTF are you on about.

I’m pretty disappointed and upset about this too. Apple dropped the ball on this one. Especially for a company that touts their unbeatable privacy and security.

Seems pretty reasonable. There should be consequences if you advertise a privacy feature that doesn’t work, know it doesn’t work, and still push it anyway.

You don't have to be doing something wrong or illegal to expect privacy.

Discovery for this will be very interesting to see if the claim that Apple knew and still advertised it as safe, when in fact they knew it was not.

A flaw found, being corrected, and no actual issues happened. Sounds like lawyers bing lawyers.
As far as I know it hasn't been fixed.

Makes sense to me. This very second, iCloud+ subscribers are creating new Hide My Email addresses thinking their real email address is hidden when it’s not. And Apple has known it’s not for over a year now.
