Gurman: New MacBook Pro Models to Launch in Early 2023, iMac With M3 Chip Possible Later in Year

Apple plans to release new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M2 Pro and M2 Max chip options "early next year," according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The laptops were originally expected to launch this year, but reportedly faced delays internally.

The current 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips were released in October 2021 and featured an all-new design with a notch in the display and the return of an HDMI port, MagSafe, and an SD card reader. Macs often go several years between redesigns, so a mere spec bump in 2023 makes sense.

Gurman also said a new iMac with an M3 chip will "probably launch at the end of 2023 at the earliest," without sharing any further details. The current iMac launched in April 2021 with the M1 chip and a slim, colorful design, and Gurman previously said Apple planned to skip releasing an iMac with the M2 chip. He added that Apple remains interested in a new iMac Pro with Apple silicon, but that it has faced delays internally.

Apple also continues to test new Mac mini models with M2 and M2 Pro chip options, according to Gurman, but he did not share a launch timeframe.

I wonder what happened to M2 Pro and M2 Max. The MBA with an M2 is already mid-cycle so only releasing M2 Pro and M2 Max now is a little late.
Not really. M1 Pro and Max were about a year after M1.

Apple's decisions have been baffling recently. When they released the M2, they should have thrown it into the iMac and Mac Mini immediately. It doesn't make any sense to hold back for six-plus months on an upgrade that requires nearly zero additional engineering work. Apple is too used to thinking "revision n+1 has to be compelling for buyers of revision n to upgrade" rather than "each of our Macs needs to have the newest, fastest, best tech available at the time". If that means they end up doing two revisions in a year, so be it! They need to make their computers compelling for NEW buyers (and those on ancient Mac systems like me).

It's been a boneheaded decision right from the beginning.

I saw someone else try and defend it saying there's extra screen to the sides of it. No -- other manufacturers have webcams, no bezels, AND no notch.

The ONLY excuse Apple may have is I think they have a higher quality (read: bigger) webcam than other manufacturers so its possible they couldn't fit their camera within the bezel. Again, that's a big maybe.
Yeah my corporate slavery Dell does not have a notch. However it does have the worst possible camera I've ever seen in a laptop, the lid weighs as much as my entire macbook pro does, the screen has dim bits round the edges and it rattles like a box of broken crockery if you twang the top of the screen. The camera is so bad for Microsoft's awful version of FaceID only works if you're well lit room but not too well lit!

Terrible on a$5k 🤦🏻‍♂️machine. I'd be so pissed if I'd bought it for myself.

Give me the notch over this crap any day.

No major changes expected 🤦‍♀️ I will only upgrade if Apple releases the 14" - 16" MacBook Pro Models in Midnight color. Getting tired of the retro classic silver and space gray.
