New App Store Rules Target AI Deepfakes and Nudify Apps

Apple today expanded its App Store moderation rules to cover AI-generated nonconsensual intimate imagery. Sexually explicit content was already banned, but now Apple says app developers must proactively prevent and remove AI-generated deepfakes from their platforms. Apple warns that apps with offending content could be removed from the ‌App Store‌ if developers fail to act.

Liquid Glass App Store Feature
The updated 1.2 rule names AI content creation apps and could be targeting apps like Grok, among others. Users have complained about xAI's Grok chatbot being used for nude and sexualized deepfakes, and earlier this year, Apple told xAI it would remove Grok from the ‌App Store‌ if it continued to permit nude deepfakes. xAI put safeguards in place, and Apple approved an updated version of the app.

Apple also added guideline 2.5.19 to clarify that developers who add features or functionality not present in the version of an app submitted for review risk removal from the ‌App Store‌ and Apple Developer Program. Apple links the rule to "nudification" apps that create sexually explicit images of real individuals without their consent, suggesting some of the apps have concealed their true purpose during review and added the nudify feature after approval.

Apps containing hidden or undocumented features are also prohibited on the App Store, including apps that misrepresent their purpose during review and only reveal harmful capabilities — such as "nudification" — after approval, a tactic commonly known as bait-and-switch.

Along with changes focused on AI-generated content, Apple updated section 5 to extend its ban on apps that facilitate human trafficking or child exploitation to alternative app distribution.

"We do not hesitate to remove apps, and terminate the developers behind them, when they violate these guidelines," reads Apple's developer news post on the rule changes.

Apple's full updated guidelines can be found on its website.

Yeah, Nudify apps are already available on the Web. The App Store isn't stopping this AI train, it left a long time ago
Just because they're available on the web doesn't mean Apple should ignore them when they're on their App Store. Apple might not be able to stop it, but Apple shouldn't be contributing to it either. Apple allowing these apps onto their App Store means Apple is condoning it.

Won’t change that X is allowed even though it is full of AI-generated CSAM until Trump is gone or neutered by the midterms.

The US ruled that AI generated child porn is protected by the 1st amendment. At this point I'm wondering if the people over there have begun to mate with vegetables.
That’s not quite what that particular federal court of appeals found. The ruling was that the First Amendment protects the mere possession, within one’s home, of entirely AI-generated child sexual abuse images that do not depict real children.

As disturbing as the imagery is, the legal reasoning is not dissimilar to someone creating a painting and keeping it in their home without distributing or selling it. While someone might consider the imagery distasteful, immoral, evil, or whatever adjective they want to use, the important legal distinction is that no actual child was depicted or exploited in producing those images. That’s not my reasoning — I’m just explaining the court’s reasoning.

Importantly, the ruling does not extend that protection to producing or distributing obscene material. In fact, the court allowed the charges involving production, distribution, and transmission to a minor to proceed.

This was also a federal appellate ruling, not a Supreme Court decision establishing a nationwide rule. It remains subject to further judicial review and could ultimately be overturned.

This is important context because it wasn't the "U.S. ruled". It was a court that said generated imagery in a particular situation might not automatically be unconstitutional.

They will never enforce this against Grok because Trump/Musk/Tim Apple will always show solidarity towards each other.

Rich people have always been above the law.
