In this context, "Independent" artists and labels simply refer to those who are not part of the five major record labels. Apple recently opened their iTunes Music Service to independent labels and artists. Jody Whitesides notes being "very first person to sign up for CDbaby's Digital Distribution" and will also be available through iTunes as well as a number of other online music servicecs.
