Walt Disney announced today that it has agreed to license Microsoft's digital rights management technology which "prevents illegal distribution and copying of audio and visual content stored digitally." (presumably Windows Media Format)
According to the press release, Disney plans on selling online versions of its movies by late 2004 or early 2005.
Microsoft and Disney plan to put movies in digital format, distribute them via the Internet and on portable media. The movies could be legally transferred between computers and a new generation of portable video devices with hard drives.
In recent related news, Pixar dropped Disney as a partner for their movie creation/distribution, and Jobs was openly critical of Disney during a recent earnings conference call for Pixar.
