Apple to Launch New MacBook Air in June-July

094654 mba

Digitimes reports that Apple is planning on new shipments of 11.6" and 13.3" MacBook Air models for launch in June or July. The new MacBook Airs will feature the Sandy Bridge chipset and Thunderbolt interface.

Main supply chain makers for the new models remain about the same as for the existing MacBook Air, with Quanta Computer solely responsible for assembly, Catcher Technology supplying casings, Auras Technology a main supplier of thermal modules, Shin Zu Shing supplying hinges, and Simplo Technology and Dynapack supplying batteries, the sources pointed out. However, none of the makers have confirmed their participation in making new MacBook Airs.

CNet had previously reported that Apple had been planing the MacBook Air refresh in June.

Exactly. Light from screen + typing skills = no need for backlit keyboard! :D

Backlit keyboard is a nice feature. People like it; people are used to it. At no point should a computer company say "You need to re-learn how to use the keyboard to use our computer to its maximum potential."

To those of us who can type without looking at the keyboard: Fantastic. Great. But not everyone can do that, so leave those people alone and get off your high horse.

BL Keyboards are more important to some than others. If it's a deal-breaker for some, let it be their deal-breaker. If you don't give a rat's butt, that's fine, too. But it's a feature that has existed in the past and for almost every other line of MacBook-family portables, so it makes sense that people would want to see it in their machine of choice.

Damn, my recently ordered macbook air is due to arrive today..
Does anyone know if I can return it and if this will cost me anything?

You have 14 days to return it without cost [If purchased from an Apple Store or Apple Online Store]. Sometimes Apple allow 30 days when a revised model is released - but this is not guaranteed the 14 days is however...

Send it back and then practice a little patience and wait for the impending refresh - Sandy Bridge & Thunderbolt will offer major improvements over current MBA performance and i/o throughput options.

Perfect timing, I'm going to be in the market for one right about that time. Which GPU will they use though? Sure hope they bring keyboard backlighting back to the 11".

The only one they can if they use Sandy Bridge:
Intel HD Graphics 3000

Same that's in the 13" MacBook Pro.
