Apple Releases iTunes 11.4 for Mavericks With Support for iOS 8

Apple today released iTunes 11.4 for OS X Mavericks, bringing support for iOS 8. According to the release notes, the update adds the ability for users to sync movies, music, and more to devices running iOS 8.

iTunes 11.4 can be downloaded via the Software Update Mechanism in the Mac App Store or through Apple’s iTunes website.

The release of iTunes 11.4 comes just over a week ahead of iOS 8’s public release date. Apple has plans to launch the software on Wednesday, September 17, two days before the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus are available in stores.

Does that mean that I have to upgrade my MacPro 1,1 to 10.8 Mavericks in order to sync my iPhone 4S?
I had to upgrade to 10.6 for iOS 7.
No. iTunes 11.4 requires OS X 10.6.8 or later. It has appeared in Software Update on my Snow Leopard machine.

Downloading this update broke iTunes for me and kept iTunes from recognizing my iOS devices. I got a System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext error and so have multiple threads of people on the Apple Support boards using multiple OS.

I had to upgrade to 10.6 for iOS 7.

Just don't upgrade your iPhone and you won't have to upgrade your computer

I just installed the update and the U2 album appeared for free as an iCloud download as soon as iTunes 11.4 opened.

If it is not appearing for you, make sure that your iTunes is set to "Show itunes in the Cloud purchases" under iTunes -> Preferences -> Store
