T-Mobile Now Offers Unlimited Talk, Text and 4G LTE Data in Canada and Mexico at No Additional Charge

by

TMobile Mobile Without BordersT-Mobile has announced a new "Un-carrier" move called "Mobile Without Borders" that enables customers with Simple Choice postpaid and prepaid plans to send and receive unlimited phone calls, text messages and use 4G LTE data in Canada and Mexico at no additional cost. The extended three-country plan will be available starting July 15 in select Canadian and Mexican markets.

T-Mobile customers with Simple Choice plans will be able to make unlimited calls to and from the United States to any number, including landlines and mobile phones, in Mexico and Canada, alongside unlimited text messaging and the full monthly allotment of 4G LTE data they would normally have in the U.S. at no extra charge. Music Freedom is included while roaming in Canada or Mexico.

Canadian and Mexican residents looking to take advantage of this T-Mobile promotion are out of luck, as Simple Choice customers must reside in the U.S. and primary usage must occur on T-Mobile's network in the U.S. The carrier also warns that Simple Choice plans are not intended for extended international usage. Data Stash will be available for use while in Canada or Mexico later this year.

Coverage in Canada includes Banff National Park, Bay of Fundy, Brampton, Burnaby, Calgary, Edmonton, Gatineau, Halifax, Hamilton, Kitchener, Laval, London, Longueuil, Markham, Mississauga, Montreal, Niagara Falls, Ottawa, Quebec City, Regina, Richmond, Saskatoon, St Johns, Surrey, Toronto, Vancouver, Vaughan, Victoria, Whistler, Windsor and Winnipeg. Coverage in Mexico includes 117 markets.

Existing Simple Choice customers can opt-in online, by phone or at a T-Mobile store for free. T-Mobile customers on promotional or legacy plans can add Mobile Without Borders for $10 per month. Mobile Without Borders business plans are also available.

Love this company for what it's doing to shake up the wireless industry. I've dealt with getting hit with roaming charges in the past, and it's not pretty, and it's cumbersome to have to call up to guess and gauge when how much you'll have to use before you even get there.

This is pretty incredible. Going to Canada and Mexico with no roaming? Plus LTE usage? How is it that Verizon and AT&T don't do something similar.

This is a pretty good deal. My mom goes to Mexico every now and then and she could use this.

Do something like this in Europe and they will really get something going. This is a great deal for anyone in the US near a border town.

Two things:
1. Someone asked about roaming partners in Mexico. As far as I've seen around in the Internet I think it is both Telcel and Movistar. My son is traveling in Mexico and he saw his phone change from Movistar to Telcel LTE (but not higher speed). Perhaps this is in preparation of July 15.
2. I've seen a lot of media coverage, forum posters, AT&T apologists fail to realize that even bigger than the roaming functionality it is the free calling to Mexico and Canada. With millions and millions of people making calls to friends and families in Canada and Mexico, T-Mobile has a good chance of getting a lot of people switch to T-Mobile. I've seen forum posters saying that AT&T might not be forced to act because this plan attracts only business people who travel to Mexico or Canada frequently. As I say, they fail to see all the regular folks who call to Mexico often and also travel with family to Mexico or Canada frequently. I understand Mexico is also (through legislation) moving towards free calls from Mexico to the US. One big player was Nextel (with their 2-Way radio function) that allowed people to communicate from Mexico to US and back for free. Now there are many more options to communicate for free (voice, messages), WhatsApp, Skype, Messenger, etc. However, for an old good call to a fixed line, this T-Mobile offer is hard to beat.

I was an AT&T customer for years, but I am having much more fun with T-Mobile and their antics than I ever had with AT&T. Yes, AT&T has better coverage, but they lack innovation (Wi-Fi calling, they were late on Voice over LTE, etc.) and I really dislike their overage strategy. I much rather suffer an occasional (not often at all, as I live in a large urban area) poor signal than AT&T business practices.
