Elago's New M4 Stand Turns Your iPhone 7, 6s, or 6 Into The Original Macintosh

by

Back in January, accessory maker Elago launched the W3 Charging Stand for Apple Watch, which housed Apple's modern wearable within a silicone shell that looked just like the Macintosh computer from 1984. This week, Elago is launching another nostalgic accessory, this time allowing users to turn their iPhone 7, 6s, or 6 into an old Mac.

Called the M4 Stand for iPhone, the charging stand functions exactly like the Apple Watch version: users slide their iPhone into the side of the silicone housing, and there's a pass-through rail underneath the stand for Lightning cable organization. In terms of size, the M4 Stand is about 5.8 inches long, 4.3 inches wide, and 5 inches tall.

View your iPhone through a blast from the past. Your iPhone fits perfectly into the stand and transforms it into an old Apple monitor.

The M4 Stand is made with scratch-free silicone to prevent damage to your iPhone and cable; the material's unique properties allow the stand to feel soft to the touch and provide weight to plant your stand on any flat surface.

The M4 isn't compatible with any Plus versions of the iPhone, nor will it work with an iPhone that's in any sort of protective case. Elago did mention, however, that the company's line of "Slim Fit" cases are compatible with the M4 Stand.

The M4 Stand for iPhone is available in Black and Classic White on Elago's website for $29.49. Elago is also selling both the Black and Classic White M4 Stand on Amazon at a slightly higher price of $29.99.

They're selling this thing for nearly $30.00 now and I bet you'll be able to pick it up on eBay in a year or so for $10.00 or less. I'm not sure how this thing made it into production. Why would I want to slide my iPhone 7 into a plastic shell that looks like an old Mac? I'm all for nostalgia, but this is just tacky.

Serious question: what's the point of this? While I'm a sucker for miniatures that resemble the original Macintosh (this ('http://www.wired.co.uk/article/lego-mini-macintosh-computer') is IMO one of the coolest things ever) I just don't see this as anything but a novelty piece of plastic.

Except the original Macintosh didn't have a movie theater width screen...
It looks more like a Lisa/Mac XL:

I hate the implementation of this ... the dimensions are seriously off compared to the original Mac and their previous effort of the Apple Watch stand. They should have put black top and bottom bezels to square-up the case a little more, and made it deeper so the whole thing doesn't look squashed.

But I hope this means they'll make an iPad stand soon, since it has the right dimensions for a full scale replica Compact Mac, as some have been doing with the original Mac for some time:

How about a wired keyboard and mouse to go with it?
Agreed, they should now do a retro case shell for the wireless keyboard. The mouse would be pointless since it's incompatible with iOS, but maybe a mouse case that has another function.

They couldn't demo the white stand using a white-front iPhone?
You wouldn't want that. First of all it's not white, it's beige -- PMS 453 to be specific -- and the original Compact Mac had a black bezel around the display image. So this is the correct way to display it in as much as this is a nostalgia item. A while iPhone is going to look odd there for any Mac purists.

If it had more functionality besides charging your phone (for instance, if it were a bluetooth speaker), then I might bite. But the fact that it's non-functional and would also require me to remove my case each time makes it pointless for me.
