Gmail iPad App Update Adds Support for Split View Multitasking

by

Google has updated its Gmail app for iPad to add long-awaited Split View support, meaning the app can now be used in Apple's multitasking split screen mode alongside another app.

Gmail Multitasking
Google announced the introduction of Split View support in a blog post, saying the feature is available now to all users.

When using an iPad, you're now able to multitask with Gmail and other iOS applications. You can use Gmail and Google Calendar at the same time with Split View to check your schedule before replying to an email to confirm a meeting time. Or, you can easily drag and drop pictures from Google Photos into an email without leaving Gmail.

Before you attempt to use Split View, make sure multitasking is enabled on your ‌iPad‌: Launch the Settings app, go to Home Screen & Dock > Multitasking and select Allow Multiple Apps.

To use Split View when the Gmail app is open, bring up the Dock with a short swipe up from the bottom of the screen, then touch and hold another app icon and drag it up, over to the left or right edge of the screen, then release your finger.

Gmail can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

Tried to find out when Split View was announced, found an article from 2015 ('https://techcrunch.com/2015/06/08/apple-ipad-gets-split-screen-multitasking-in-ios-9/'). This is why I don't use Gmail. I don't care if they have better spam detection etc, I don't want to wait 5 years for basic system features.

I don’t know why apple don’t make these features requirements for app store eligibility.

Facebook... still no dark mode after a year.

Gmail - taking however long this has been.

Don’t get me started on “sign in with Apple”.

Seriously. It's so bizarre how some of their apps would support multitasking but something you would think would certainly have it (Gmail) didn't until now.

You can't mandate develops add every feature. Sign in with apple for example won't work for every type of app. But this feature, split view multitasking is now required as of June 30th.

It's not as easy as people think it is too add multitasking to every app. Apps with more complex UI's require a fair bit of adjustments to be made as the app is scaled.

Yei! 😎👍

I find the ads in the Gmail app quite jarring. When the default email app is workable and apps like Outlook are free, I don't feel the need to go into the Gmail app very often.
I have not seen a single ad in Gmail Apps on my iPhone or iPad? 🤔
