YouTube App Adds HDR Support for iPhone 12

The most recent YouTube App update (15.45.2) has added HDR support for the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. YouTube has supported HDR on its iOS app since the iPhone X but has required updates to support new hardware.

To check to see if you are watching YouTube videos at their highest quality, you can simply press the three dots on the top right of the video, and you should see "HDR" options listed on supported videos.

HDR options are also only available on devices released since 2017 that have OLED displays (so that excludes all iPad models and the ‌iPhone 11‌ and iPhone XR).

I won't be going back to the YouTube app until they include picture-in-picture support. Being locked inside their app just to keep a video playing just doesn't work for me.

144p at HDR must be the best. I'm sure it's so muddy you can't even tell the difference anymore...

I was so tired of the endless stream of ads: before the video, during the video, in the sidebar, the nagging to go premium, ... So I deleted the iOS app, added a link to the YT website on my home screen and couldn’t be happier. No more ads and free PiP! Google needs to realise they can’t keep bombarding us with ads.

The only thing I miss are the quick rewind and fast forward buttons, but I can do without them.

I noticed this early last week. How is 144p60 HDR???
HDR and resolution aren't related... HDR refers to the colour and brightness etc. You can still have SDR on 8K and HDR on the lowest resolution possible.
