iPhone 17 and 'iPhone 17 Air' Again Rumored to Feature 120Hz ProMotion Displays

All four iPhone 17 models launching next year will be equipped with low-power LTPO displays, according to an industry source cited by South Korea's ETNews this week. While the report does not mention this, the use of LTPO technology suggests that the entire iPhone 17 lineup will feature ProMotion displays with a variable refresh rate up to 120Hz.

ProMotion has been limited to the Pro models since it debuted on the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max in 2021, so the feature's expansion to the iPhone 17 and the rumored, tentatively-named "iPhone 17 Air" would be notable. Samsung and LG will supply the LTPO displays for all iPhone 17 models, according to the report.

LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) is a low-power backplane technology for OLED displays that allows for a variable refresh rate with reduced power consumption, ensuring that ProMotion does not significantly impact battery life.

iPhone displays with ProMotion have smoother-looking scrolling and video content. ProMotion would also allow the iPhone 17 and "iPhone 17 Air" displays to ramp down to a more power-efficient refresh rate. iPhone 13 Pro models can ramp down to 10Hz, while iPhone 14 Pro through iPhone 16 Pro models can go as low as 1Hz, allowing for an always-on display that shows various Lock Screen elements even when the device is locked. It is unclear if the iPhone 17 and the "iPhone 17 Air" would ramp down to 10Hz or 1Hz.

Display Supply Chain Consultants CEO Ross Young previously informed MacRumors that the iPhone 17 and "iPhone 17 Air" will likely support ProMotion, and the feature's expansion to the entire iPhone 17 lineup has been rumored multiple times.

The standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus still have 60Hz displays.

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 17 series in September 2025.

iPhone 17's 8GB Limit Costs It These Two Siri AI Features in iOS 27

Apple this week revealed what its most advanced on-device AI model does, and the feature list is shorter than the hardware requirements might suggest. In its Siri AI announcement during WWDC 2026, Apple confirmed that the model powers two things: more expressive Siri voices and a major accuracy gain for systemwide dictation. Both require 12GB of unified memory. Among current iPhones, that ...

The iPhone 17 Can't Do This With Siri. The iPhone 18 Will

During WWDC 2026, Apple confirmed that its most powerful on-device AI model is currently only compatible with the latest iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The reason for the device limitation is that the AI model requires 12GB of RAM to run, and only the above iPhones have that amount. Unfortunately, the iPhone 17 misses out because it has 8GB of RAM. That means iPhone 17 ...

There is growing speculation that Apple may hike the prices of its iPhone 17 lineup as soon as this month, following CEO Tim Cook's recent comments about "unavoidable" price increases. Last week, Cook told The Wall Street Journal that Apple is no longer able to absorb the increased cost of memory and storage chips, both of which are in high demand from AI and neocloud companies as they...

Having 60Hz displays today on mobile devices like these are inexcusable. 👎

Imo the iPhone 14 should've been the last iPhone to feature a 60Hz panel. Not because everyone absolutely needs it, but because the starting price of these phones is way too high for them to still come with 60Hz panels.

Finally, I can stop buying the damn Pro iPhone to get a feature that $400 Android phones all have.

The older I get, the less I care about phones, but ProMotion is important to me.

If you were to ask a typical iPhone user about their screens refresh rate, very very few would know or care. Higher refresh capability is nice and the tech has matured to be on lower end devices. But it’s far from a critical feature for most people. Most people don’t even know.

I want a folding iPhone. It is time Apple.
I'm pretty sure the Air is going to be a folding phone. $1299 price tag for a single camera and an ultra-thin and light design? Sounds like a folding phone to me!
