iPhone 17's 8GB Limit Costs It These Two Siri AI Features in iOS 27

Wednesday June 10, 2026 2:19 am PDT by
Apple this week revealed what its most advanced on-device AI model does, and the feature list is shorter than the hardware requirements might suggest. In its Siri AI announcement during WWDC 2026, Apple confirmed that the model powers two things: more expressive Siri voices and a major accuracy gain for systemwide dictation. Both require 12GB of unified memory. Among current iPhones, that ...

The iPhone 17 Can't Do This With Siri. The iPhone 18 Will

During WWDC 2026, Apple confirmed that its most powerful on-device AI model is currently only compatible with the latest iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The reason for the device limitation is that the AI model requires 12GB of RAM to run, and only the above iPhones have that amount. Unfortunately, the iPhone 17 misses out because it has 8GB of RAM. That means iPhone 17 ...

There is growing speculation that Apple may hike the prices of its iPhone 17 lineup as soon as this month, following CEO Tim Cook's recent comments about "unavoidable" price increases. The Air really IS the star of this year...
Compared to the base 17? No way. The air is a product no one asked for and is neutered in every way. Only a single camera, no mmWave support, $200 more than the base 17, small battery, etc.

Even 12GB of RAM won't convince me to buy the Pro over the base 17

Still more appealing and exciting. Argue with the wall.
Once the iPhone disappears in a case, I never think about how it looks. Everything interesting happens on the screen. But maybe that's just me.

I'm not saying the Air is not an attractive package. I would be worried about battery life though.
