New MacBook Pros With OLED Displays Coming Next Year

Apple will launch new MacBook Pro models featuring OLED displays next year, according to Korea's The Elec.

The ‌OLED‌ display panels for the 14- and 16-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ are reportedly set to be produced by Samsung Display; it is believed to be the sole supplier of the new displays.

Panel production will apparently begin in the second quarter of 2026, but some components will start production in the first quarter. Prototypes will start to be made at Samsung's Gen 8 ‌OLED‌ factory A6 later this year.

Apple is said to be looking for ways to lower the costs of some of the components. Samsung has apparently developed some new parts for the panels, but if they do not meet the specific characteristics that Apple desires, there could be delays.

The initial production volume is believed to be around two to three million units. Samsung can manufacture up to 10 million units per year if necessary.

Compared to current ‌MacBook Pro‌ models with mini-LED screens, benefits of ‌OLED‌ technology could include increased brightness, higher contrast ratio with deeper blacks, improved power efficiency for longer battery life, and more.

The new machines will launch in the fourth quarter of 2026, which runs from October to December. The report is the latest corroboration of Apple's plan to release a significant revamp of the ‌MacBook Pro‌ next year.

For years, Apple told us that OLED was inferior and that nano-LED (not mini-LED) was the future. Now they’ve deprecated nano-LED project and now they're going to do the same for mini-LED and suddenly claim OLED is the best?
It was microLED that Apple pursued (and likely still is pursuing). OLED technology has made significant improvements with the top quality laptop sized screens now starting to match the quality, prices, and yields of the mini LED screen Apple uses.

Also, where has Apple claimed OLED screens are the best for laptops? I don't remember reading that announcement anywhere. Can you provide a link to it?

Edit: Apple uses OLED screens in iPhones for various reasons. One of those is the quality at the size of phone screens is excellent. Another is that the costs are reasonable given that they are the dominant type of screen being used for smartphones.

What hasn't happened to date is having OLED screens that match the color accuracy, sizes, yields, brightness, durability, efficiencies, etc. of the screens currently in Apple laptops. The screen in the iPad Pro does but it tops out at 13", which is smaller than the MacBook Pro screens.

That is why Apple has not yet switched. If Apple does next year or the year afterward, it's because the OLED technology has finally at least matched what Apple is currently using. Apple will move on from OLED when there is something better (microLED is still a great candidate).
