Apple Launches Second Limited-Edition iPhone Accessory in a Month

Apple has begun selling the Hikawa Phone Grip and Stand, a new limited-edition iPhone accessory designed with accessibility in mind.

Designed by LA-based Bailey Hikawa to celebrate the 40th anniversary of accessibility at Apple, the grip uses magnets to securely snap onto any iPhone with MagSafe.

Apple says it can be removed with ease, and doubles as a stand with two different viewing angles, in both vertical and horizontal orientations.

Inspired by modern sculpture, the Hikawa's design process involved direct input from individuals with disabilities affecting muscle strength, dexterity, and hand control.

The limited edition Hikawa Phone Grip and Stand is available in two colors: a bold, high-visibility Chartreuse and recycled Crater, exclusive to Apple.

The Hikawa Phone Grip and Stand costs $69.95 and can be ordered from Apple's online store in the U.S. It's the second limited-edition iPhone accessory Apple has released this month, following the high-end designer iPhone Pocket, a cross-body pouch starting at $149.95.

Due to manufacturing volume, probably made for less than a $1 via injection molded process but sold for $69.95 because customers like to be ripped off.

It looks 100% exactly like the brackets we have on IV poles here at the hospital I work at. Just needs a set screw. They even have that recycled plastic look.

Inspired by modern sculpture, my ass; it was inspired by Stryker and STERIS. 😂

I don’t trust these cost estimates at all, however a markup from component cost of 5x sounds about right. Add margin for the factory, margin for Apple, margin for distribution, margin for the retailer, and 5x is quite reasonable. I can’t think of many products in this price category where I would expect a lower markup.

For an accessory like this, at least 10x. This may sound high to the uneducated, but that is actually just as fair as whatever salary you put on top of the burger you are flipping at McDonalds.
This is an accessory made by a name designer.

Have you ever seen the cost of a furniture made by Patricia Urquiola or a light element made by Louis Polsen or Jan Pauwels?

Why does an Hermes Bag cost 50.000 USD? Or a RR costing upwards of 700k USD, which is a streched 7-series? Surely the markups are insane. But the design and the brand make them valuable.

I havent heard of this person that designed this accessory, but it seems that it was designed with a certain aspiration in mind, has a unique touch of their approach and made with Apple's partnership -> 70 USD.

Certainly is not for me, but I'm not sh***ng on it either.
