Mac Studio With M5 Ultra Chip and 512GB of RAM Launching in October

Mac Studio FeatureApple today unveiled new Mac Studio models with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips. Pre-orders began today ahead of a September 22 launch, but one configuration will not be available until later.

Apple says the Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra chip and 512GB of RAM will be coming in "late October," with U.S. pricing expected to start well above the $10,000 mark. Apple stopped offering the previous-generation Mac Studio with 512GB of RAM in March due to the ongoing memory chip shortage, but it appears that the upgrade option will return for the new model in two months from now.

I never thought I’d live to see the day a freakin computer costs more than a car. With a dead internet one has to wonder what the appeal is even, anymore. Talk about an industry that has totally forgotten itself.

I miss the tenacity of Jobs fighting to keep consumer prices down. Outside making compelling products, keeping them affordable was his super power.

I think you have some rose colored glasses on. There have always been computers more expensive than cars, even consumer-focused computers. Also, Apple’s hardware profit margins weren’t that different during Jobs’s tenure than what Apple has now.

Additionally, keep in mind that Jobs was also responsible for the $14,000 (in 1991) NeXTdimension, Lisa ($10,000 in 1983), Apple III ($8000 1980 configuration available), the $16,000 (2010) Mac Pro, the $20,000+ (2008) Mac Pro.

Edit: Also, where are you getting a new car for under $20,000?

You meant above the $20,000 mark (with matching SSD storage).
The 256GB of unified memory is already worth $10,799 with base 1TB storage. Btw it's not RAM
Unified memory is RAM. It is custom packaged into the SoC ,but it is still generally DRAM ( LPDDR5 variant ).

But yeah it is a $4,000 upgrade to get from 96GB -> 256GB ( a 160Gb jump ) another $4k only gets to 416…
So probably another $1-3k on top of that due to scarcity and low volume tax.

If mandates buy more SSD then crack $20K.
