Apple Pay is set to launch in India later today (Wednesday local time), starting with Axis Bank credit cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks, according to TechCrunch.
India already has a popular Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system for digital payments, so the initial rollout of Apple Pay in the country is expected to be limited. HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and SBI Bank/SBI Card are not expected to support Apple Pay at launch, the report said.
The benefit is not having to futz around with QR codes. Not having to deal with any apps. Just double click and tap.

As a tourist from a country that already supports Apple Pay, you can use it even in countries that don't necessarily support Apple Pay yet because those NFC readers simply recognize it as a "Visa" or whatever and process it just fine. My main issue in India was that I could hardly pay via NFC to begin with, everything seems to be done via QR-Codes that only work with local banks
This is so surprising to hear it isn’t there already. I feel like I’ve paid with Apple Pay there. Don’t remember being unable… but could just be forgetting.
