Night Mode Photo Shared by MacRumors Reader and Photographer Makes it Into Apple Ad

by

Abdul Dremali, a MacRumors reader who goes by Advil on the MacRumors forums, shared a Night Mode image captured with one of Apple's newest iPhones on the forums back in September 2019.

The photo depicted a lighthouse and a sky full of stars, as Dremali is an astrophotographer. Apple spotted Dremali's image after it was featured on the forums and recently used it in a new video showing off Night Mode.

Dremali has shared several ‌Night Mode‌ photos on the MacRumors forums and on his website, but the lighthouse image proved to be his most popular. According to EXIF info shared in the thread, the photo was a 20 second exposure using ‌Night Mode‌ with the standard lens and no other equipment except for a tripod.

Apple typically requires photographers and artists that it works with to sign non-disclosure agreements, so Dremali declined to comment on Apple's usage of his picture, but his astrophotography images offer up a great example of the benefits of Apple's ‌Night Mode‌ feature.

‌Night Mode‌ uses long exposure capture techniques, machine learning, and other technologies to produce vivid, bright pictures even when lighting conditions are poor. ‌Night Mode‌ allows iPhone users to take photos in the dark that were not possible with prior versions of the iPhone.

Lovely shot. And hopefully it will garner higher quality comments than the patently absurd and hostile yammer found here ('https://www.macrumors.com/2019/11/14/recreating-macos-catalina-wallpaper-video/'). 99% of internet garbage could be cured by eliminating anonymity.

I should probably get a cheap tripod...
The day I got my iPhone 11 (September 20th, 2019)- I happened to be at a restaurant in NJ & noticed you could see the NYC skyline from the parking lot. I took 2 shots- one w/ and one without Night Mode.
Lol, I had no practice & could do much better now; but I still have proudly shown this to probably a few dozen people... I’m absolutely astounded by this “computational photography mad science”, as Phil called it. =)
The funniest demo I did was taking photos under the table of our feet. It really looked like I had used a flash but I didn't.

That is an awesome picture!

I've read that if you put it in a fixed position (like a tripod) then you can have longer exposure times. It can detect the movement of you holding it.
