Apple Releases Third Public Betas of iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5

Apple today seeded the third betas of upcoming iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5 updates to public beta testers, allowing non-developers to test out the software head of its official launch. The third public betas come two weeks after the second public betas, and a day after Apple provided the betas to developers.

Those who have signed up their accounts for Apple's free beta testing program can enable the beta by opening up the Settings app, going to General, selecting Software Update, tapping on Beta Updates, and selecting the iOS 16 Public Beta option.

iOS 16.5 appears to be a relatively minor update, and few changes were found in the first developer beta. There is a new Sports tab located in the Apple News app, and Siri can now be asked to start a screen recording.

Development on iOS 16 is slowing down as Apple prepares for the upcoming June debut of iOS 17, the next-generation version of iOS.

Never seen this before in the App Store. Is this new?


I also saw it today for the first time while manually updating the apps. However, I am not running a beta, but a public 16.4.1 release.

FWIW, I have turned it off in Settings > App Store, as I did not want anything to run in the background (RAM, battery, etc.)

Beta is unstable by definition.
Not really. If one talks about new software or new OS that is never been released thats different. But you seem to lump the continuous improvement cycles of mainstream OS betas just into one category identifying it as unstable which would be erroneous. :D

A stable software release or public release is so named because it is unchanging. Its behaviour, functionality, specification or API is considered ‘final’ for that version. Apart from security patches and bug fixes, the software will not change for as long as that version of the software is supported.

Some people like that with non-stable releases such as development snapshots, beta releases or rolling releases, they are always getting the latest features as soon as they are written into the software. In many cases, these releases also fix deficiencies or bugs that would otherwise remain stagnant in the stable public release

However, confusion arises when people use this form of the word stable to refer to software that isn’t stable in the earlier sense. For example, it’s why you see comments like “I’ve been using the beta version since February and it is very stable” or “the newer version is more stable” The point that these comments make is not that the software is final and unchanging, as in a stable software release, but more that the software is stable like a chair might be stable. It seems reliable, and the user hasn’t experience any major problems.

Beta is unstable by definition. As for that Pixel Fold, let’s see some reviews, tests, etc. before getting all excited.

I bet Apple are watching the foldables’ space quite closely, most likely learning from their competitors early mistakes, so they do not repeat them if/when they decide to enter into that category themselves.
