Apple Discontinued an Accessory You Probably Didn't Even Know Existed

Apple in recent months quietly discontinued its tiny MagSafe to MagSafe 2 adapter. The adapter is no longer available to purchase on Apple's online store, and the product page has been completely removed worldwide.

8 Old MagSafe Adapters
The adapter was released in 2012, after Apple introduced MagSafe 2, which was thinner and wider than the original MagSafe standard. The adapter could be attached magnetically to the original MagSafe connector on Apple's Thunderbolt Display, Cinema Display, or 45W/85W MagSafe Power Adapters, allowing those external displays and power adapters to charge a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air equipped with MagSafe 2.

The adapter was priced at $9.99 on Apple's online store in the U.S. from 2012 all the way into 2024. Apple also started including the adapter in the box for free with the Thunderbolt Display, which was discontinued in 2016. Apple's current Studio Display, released in 2022, is the spiritual successor to the Thunderbolt Display.

Apple removed MagSafe 2 from the MacBook Pro in 2016, and from the MacBook Air in 2018. However, it reintroduced the magnetic charging standard with MagSafe 3 on the MacBook Pro in 2021, and on the MacBook Air in 2022. Apple also uses the MagSafe name for the magnetic wireless charging system on newer iPhones.
