Apple Maps Cycling Directions Expanded in UK and Ireland

Apple Maps now has expanded coverage for cycling directions in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The expansion, first spotted by a Reddit user, means cyclists can plan a journey on the app from, say, Land's End to John o' Groats, if they're that way inclined.

Cycling directions have been available in the UK and Ireland for a few years, but until now, support didn't cover the whole of the region. Cycling directions in Apple Maps provide specific directions for bike riders with bike lanes, bike paths, and bike-friendly routes that highlight steep inclines, stairs, and other obstacles.

Cycling directions came to ‌Apple Maps‌ in iOS 14, and are available across the United States, Australia, China, France, Germany, and Japan, as well as in select major cities around the world, such as London, Barcelona, and Toronto. Apple maintains a list of all of the areas where cycling directions are available on its website.

I’ve found Apple Map’s cycling directions to generally be pretty good in the places where it’s available and the UI is so much better than Google maps. But the pace of expansion is unforgivably slow given how much money Apple can afford to put into their maps.

The cycling option needs to be more like the walking function where you can easily plot a Custom Route around roads you know to be fun and safe.

Hopefully the Netherlands, where most of the population actually bikes daily, is next.

Good. I am trying to reduce how much I drive and London isn't the entire UK.

Am I missing something? Using the link from MR's post to Apple's page, all I see related to the UK is:

London, United Kingdom Under the 'Maps: Cycling' heading.

So that's just the capital city – no rest of UK, and no Ireland either.

Strange, it works also in The Netherlands.... But isn't shown on that list.

Good to hear this. Expansion of these features is taking a lot of time. Still waiting for it to be available in my country. Hopefully soon.
