I'm on a 13" M5 16/1TB as I type this.

Outstanding machine and incredible value for the performance it offers.

Amazon isn't gonna run out. The demand for the Air is essentially nonexistent now that the Neo exists. Of course there's still a market for it, but it's not a good sign that it's consistently already pretty heavily discounted just a month after release...
Agreed but even more importantly, Amazon has sales on Apple products constantly. No doubt, give it another 3-4 months and you'll see $200-250 discounts on those same MacBooks.

NEVER order Apple products through Amazon. They'll either get "damaged in transit" and returned to the warehouse, or they won't show up at all (possible theft). Calling them is also pointless because you can't even get to a real person. Your best bet, if and when you give up, is to go through Apple directly. I did that when the M5 was released and got it the next day.
Well, I have a pretty substantial credit with Amazon that would cut the price an additional $400.00 so it's worth it to me to go through Amazon. And the easiest way to reach a live CSR at Amazon is to start with the chat option and ask something the chat bot can't answer. It's worked twice for me so far.

I ordered an M4 Air with 15"/512GB/16GB unified memory from Amazon on March 28 for $1,099. The delivery has now been delayed 3 times for unspecified reasons. It is now supposed to be delivered this Tuesday. If they delay again, I will just give up and cancel the damn thing. Maybe I should anyway and just get the M5 version (15"/512GB/16GB for $1,149, about $150 more than the M4). Not sure if it's worth the extra money but it's a newer chip so maybe I will.

Any thought appreciated. This will be my first Mac.
I'd cancel and go m5.

The speed jump from M4 to M5 is something you'll want over the long term.

I had MBAs of both M4 and M5 variants, both on Tahoe, and I was able to notice even casual usage responsiveness increases on the M5. To me, that's worth it. YMMV
